Macedonia

The Macedonia region (not to be confused with North Macedonia, which is a country) is a large region in the north of Greece, centred around Thessaloniki. With mountains and valleys, an array of indigenous grape varieties and a thriving winemaking scene, Macedonia is one of the most exciting regions for wine in Europe. The greatest grape of the region is Xinomavro, the world-class variety that produces its finest expressions around the town of Naoussa. But Xinomavro is not the only variety here, and there are plenty of maverick natural winemakers challenging the more traditional producers and experimenting with technique and variety. Nor is Naoussa the only area worth exploring - the whole vast region is home to many thrilling wines just waiting to be discovered.
